Dublin by Lamplight

The critically acclaimed, Barrymore award-winning Dublin by Lamplight will play ten performances at the Mandell Theater. The play is from Philadelphia’s Inis Nua Theatre Company, this year’s Mandell Professionals in Residence Project (MPiRP) company. Dublin by Lamplight is a collaboration of the Drexel Co-op Theatre Company and Inis Nua Theatre Company which will have our talented students working alongside the Inis Nua Company. The Mandell Professionals in Residence Project (MPiRP) is now in its twelfth year of bringing professional artists to Drexel to instruct, collaborate and perform. Our students continue to rise to the challenge of holding their own on stage with some of Philadelphia’s finest theatre artists which is no easy task, and we’ve seen numerous professional relationships develop between our students and the regional theatre community. In fact, many of our alumni are now a part of that professional community including some who have worked on other Inis Nua productions.
Dublin by Lamplight takes you into Dublin, 1904, as the Irish National Theatre of Ireland is ready to burst into life in a city teeming with poverty and political unrest. Fading stars, rebels, escorts and romantics irreverently expose the strange and lurid world of Dublin by Lamplight as six actors, four of which are Drexel students, play over forty roles in a fast-paced tale about the launch of the Irish National Theatre. Tom Reing, Inis Nua’s Founder and Artistic Director and the director of Dublin by Lamplight, described working with the students, “These students have risen to the challenge! They’re eager, they love the professionals working with them, and they’re there to serve the play by creating the best show possible. It’s been a joy for me—the best part of my day! I truly haven’t faced any challenges at all with them.”
Translated from the Irish language, Inis Nua means “New Island.” Their mission is to produce contemporary, provocative plays from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales which reflect those cultures’ new identities in today’s world. Inis Nua also seeks to cultivate and produce contemporary, provocative work from American playwrights who deal with the Irish-American, Welsh-American, Scottish-American and Anglo-American experience.
